Picasso and The Museum. Centro Cultural Bancaja. Valencia. October 2015 - February 2016

The exhibition Picasso and the museum brings together a selection of more than 200 works among prints, oil paintings and photography that reflect how museums, and the masterpieces exhibited in them, were an important source of inspiration in Pablo Picasso's production. The exhibition, curated by Javier Molins, has works from the Bancaja Foundation's artistic collection, to which are added relevant transfers from the Reina Sofía National Museum of Art, from the Picasso Museum in Malaga, the Picasso Foundation - Museo Casa Natal . Malaga City Council, and the Telefónica Foundation.

The tour of the exhibition allows us to know how the work of the great masters of art history that houses museums was an important source of inspiration throughout his career. Since Pablo Picasso visited the Prado Museum for the first time, when he was 13 years old, and was able to contemplate Zurbarán, El Greco, Velázquez or Goya, he kept his entire life contemplating the works in museums as a method of learning and artistic reinterpretation.

This influence is shown through eight thematic blocks: The Prado Museum: Velázquez and Goya; El Greco: the burial of the Count of Orgaz; The Trocadero Museum and primitive art; The Louvre, Delacroix and Jacqueline; Rembrandt; Degas as a spectator; the Ingres Museum in Montauban; and Rafael and La Fornarina. The exhibition is completed with the projection of excerpts from the documentary The Mystery Picasso , by the French filmmaker Henry-Georges Clouzot, filmed in 1955. The film, shot in the studio of the Malaga painter, allows to know the technique and the way of working of Picasso brushstroke A brushstroke, showing the birth of a work of art.

On the occasion of the exhibition a catalog has been published with the reproduction of some works and texts of the curator. The catalog is available in Spanish, Valencian and English. In addition, visitors have a free distribution brochure with information about the exhibition and with images of some of the works on display.
